Loot Crate DX “Horror” Unboxing & Review – October 2016

loot crate dx review

Loot Crate DX is the premium box from, who else but Loot Crate. The box runs $50/month and is filled with high quality, exclusive items every month. The theme for October 2016 was (of course) “Horror” and features items from: The Evil Dead, Scream, & The Thing. So how about we dive in and see what this month had to offer…
.

.

…ok now let’s get a closer look at everything…

Loot Crate DX Hellraiser Pin

Normally I really don’t go for pins but there have been a few really cool ones coming in boxes lately. This Pinhead Hellraiser pin is just plain awesome and it’s the perfect choice for a Horror themed box. I haven’t watched a Hellraiser since I was younger but I remember they scared the piss out of me!

Delirium Magazine

I really REALLY don’t like to get things like this inside a premium box. Yes, it fits the theme and the value is there with a $10 cover charge but… nah no thanks. Once I’m done reading it (which it seems like it’s half ads) then it’s just garbage. Loot Crate DX is supposed to be about premium collectibles and I don’t see this as fitting the bill.

Evil Dead II Print

On every survey that Loot Crate DX has sent I have repeatedly asked them to stop sending prints. That being said I do think that this one is pretty awesome. I am a huge Evil Dead fan and they even decided to finally number the prints… even though there are 17000 made which defeats the purpose lol. I may actually frame this up and put it on a wall somewhere.

Walking Dead Coffee Dweller Mug

Much like the famed “Well Walker” from early on in the series, this mug has a torso of a walker in the middle that peeks out once your coffee gets below a certain level. Yes this item is pretty cool in that respect but mugs are such a geek box cliché that it’s really hard to get excited over them after you’ve been a long time subscriber.

The Thing Statue

I have mixed feelings about this item. I loved the movie and this is a very good quality statue… but well I don’t know. There’s just something about it that just looks pretty boring. There were so many better twisted “Thing” formations in the movie like with spider legs and such that could have been done… this just falls short of capturing that classic “Thing” feel.

Ghostface “The Scream” Sweatshirt

I love the clever mash-up design of this shirt. It’s also licensed which is nice because other box companies would generally get around licensing with a design like this. The sweatshirt seems to be high quality and it’s very soft and comfortable. I haven’t worn a sweatshirt in ages though so it will take some getting used to… but I’ll probably be thanking Loot Crate when it’s 5 degrees outside lol.

Ash vs Evil Dead Chainsaw Power Bank

When I first saw the box I read “bank” and figured it was a plastic coin bank and not what it actually is which is a backup battery. It comes with a USB cord for charging the battery, then charging your phone. If you have an iPhone like me though, you need to supply your own cord for charging. I absolutely love this item and my only complaint is that it isn’t practical …like literally not practical at all. The purpose of a battery backup is to be portable so that you have access to a charger when you cant get to any other power source. This just seems like it will be awkward to carry and to make use of the way it’s intended… but I’ll still totally use it just for the sake of using it.

…and that was the Loot Crate DX “Horror” theme for October 2016. Overall I have mixed feelings about the box as a whole. The stuff was pretty decent but I wasn’t overly excited about any of it except for the Evil Dead Chainsaw. Next month’s theme is “Magical” and has some promising franchises featured so I’m pretty excited for that.
