In an effort to expand into other types of subscription boxes, I’ve decided to try out a service called Flaviar. The unique thing about Flaviar is that it is a monthly spirit tasting subscription box which means they send you a selection of fine alcohol to sample each month. The monthly subscription is called the Prime Membership which runs $18.99 for your first month then $24.99 every month after. The theme for my box was quite simple: “5 Flavors of Scotch”… which is exactly as it sounds. Have a look at my unboxing below:
…alright now let’s take a closer look at everything…
The box is shipped certified mail which requires the show of ID in order to prevent a minor from accepting the package. Inside the shipping box was this very nice black box which held the tasting shots inside and prevented them from being bumped around and broken.
I received 5 tasting shots of Scotch in my box, however, the website claims there are only 3 to a box so I am confused as to why that is. Maybe there was a bonus this particular month but I am not entirely sure. I am not complaining but I would say to you to expect to only get 3. I will also point out that I am not much of a scotch drinker so my pallet isn’t quite as refined as others. So I wont be giving great details into the complexity of each alcohol. (I was hoping for a rum or vodka box lol)
Laphroaig Quarter Cask
Laphroaig sells for about $60 a bottle and is quite popular among scotch drinkers. It was the first one I tried (which is why the seal is broken in the photo) and I was shocked at how strong it was. The after tastes really lingers around for a long time which was pretty good but completely unexpected.
Lagavulin 16 Year Old
Lagavulin also sells for about $60 a bottle and has been described as “not being for the faint hearted”. I agree because this one was very dry and very smoky (as they say) for my tastes. I may take the remaining shots and mix myself up a Rob Roy or something that goes down easier.
The Glenlivet 18 Year Old
The Glenlivet is a scotch that tops out around $80-$100 a bottle and is an award winning spirit. It definitely shows in the flavor as it was my favorite out of the 5 samples. It is so very smooth and flavorful and being introduced to it made this who entire box worthwhile.
Singleton of Dufftown 15 Year Old
This was one of the least expensive in the box selling for just $50 a bottle. This one was my second favorite scotch in the box and is something I could see myself having again.
Auchentoshan 12 Year Old
Finally we have the Auchentoshan which sells for around $40 a bottle. I enjoyed it better than the first 2 but it’s probably not one that I would try again. It was pretty smooth and I enjoyed drinking it but it was nothing special.
…and that was the “Five Bottles of Scotch” box from Flaviar. The subscription runs $25/month for 3 tasting bottles ($19 for the first month) and if you find one that you like in the box you can buy a full bottle right off the Flaviar website and they will ship it for free. They also have their very own App for both Apple and Android phones with in-depth reviews and ratings on over 15,000 different bottles. You can get the app free with no need for a membership at the app store of your choice.
