Run Disney Star Wars Rebel Challenge Part 2 – Star Wars Half Marathon Recap and Review
This is the second part of a 2 part race series on the Run Disney Rebel Challenge. To read Part 1 about the Star Wars 10K click here. The Inaugural Star Wars series of races took place at Disneyland in Anaheim, California on January 16th – 18th 2015 which consisted of a 5K on Friday, 10K Saturday, and Half Marathon on Sunday. Participants who registered for the Rebel Challenge ran both the 10K and Half in order to receive a special shirt and medal for the event.
Picking Up Where We Left Off… Race Day: Star Wars Half Marathon
After completing the Star Wars 10K, we spent the day in Disneyland which obviously required ALOT of walking and standing in lines. We left the park early (about 10pm) but keep in mind that our bodies are on Eastern time so it was 1am to us. Race morning we opted for a little more sleep rather than repeat the same pre-race skits that we put on before the race. We arrived to out corral with several minutes to spare before the started the racers ahead of us. We managed to catch the Star Spangled Banner which was highlighted with fireworks which was a very nice touch. Before we knew it …we were off!
This was my first official half marathon! Let me tell you I wouldn’t have had it any other way! Much like the 10K, the race began by running through the parks. The course was altered though so it wasn’t the exact same scenes in the exact same order. My feet hurt from all of the walking in the park the day before and I managed to get a blister that I was trying not to let get to me so we took every opportunity to stop and see the sights. Everything was lit beautifully and the rides were again running with no one on them. It doesn’t show in the photos but in addition to my Boba Fett shirt I was also wearing an inflatable jet pack prop in my back.
We caught the sunrise just as we entered Cars Land and I swear this photo doesn’t do it justice! It was one of the most stunning sights I have ever seen! I know the whole thing is just a huge fake set but as the sun peeked over the rocks you would swear that it was the real thing! Unfortunately after about 4 miles you exit the park and hit the streets of Anaheim for the remainder of the race. (they have to get the park ready to open after all) I wasn’t sure how I would feel running the remaining 9 miles without all the Disney magic but surprisingly they managed to work up plenty of entertainment outside of the gates as well.
They had high school bands playing from parking lots with cheerleaders lining the streets. Members of the 501st where there for photos as well as plenty of other people holding signs and cheering us on. There were people handing out candy and refreshments in addition to the multiple aid stations along the course.
We took plenty of walking breaks because we still had another full day at the Disney parks ahead of us. Let’s face it, you don’t run a Disney race for a P.R. you come for the experience (well technically it was automatically a P.R. for me). As us slower people say “we are just getting our money’s worth” lol. Before we knew it we were in the home stretch!
We crossed the finish line in 3:11:11 which actually wasn’t that bad considering all of the times we had stopped along the course for photos and what not.
After receiving our Half Marathon medal, we then went to a second area where they verified our bib number and identity in order to get our Rebel Challenge medal. I swear I have never been this excited over race bling before… and trust me… I get pretty damn excited over medals half as nice. Check them out!
We also received 3 awesome tech shirts as well:
After collecting our food box, we skipped the after party and went back to the hotel. We showered, changed, and headed back for a day in Disney’s California Adventure before flying back home. Would I do it again? …ABSOLUTELY! We are planning to run the Run Disney Wine and Dine Half Marathon this fall so that we can get the Coast to Coast medal. After that, however, I think we will be Disney’d out for a good long while and will turn our focus to some other item to cross off our bucket list!
