After a week off Anime Sunday is back! If you don’t know about my Anime Sunday series the premise is simple: Sunday mornings I veg out in bed and surf Netflix for some anime to catch my interest. It’s kind of like an adult version of the “Saturday morning cartoons” I knew as a kid lol. Today we look at the series: Gurren Lagann.
Gurren Lagann follows a group of unlikely heroes lead by 2 underground dwellers names Simon and Kamina. In the future, most of the Earth’s population lives in underground villages completely cut off from each other and the outside world. On the surface, a race called the Beastmen pilot large robots called Gunmen and are bent on wiping out every last human on the planet. One day Simon discovers a mysterious robot face buried in the ground that he and his best bud Kamina use to escape their little underground pit and venture out into the world. They, along with a scantily clad bad ass girlie named Yoko make it their mission to take on the Beastmen and win their planet back.
At first glance this series looked pretty cheesy and I considered turning it off. The animation reminded me of like a Pokémon cartoon or something and the robots are basically faces with arms and legs. Simon tends to be a whiny little runt and Kamina is really over the top full of himself so the dialog was a little tough to swallow in the beginning. I generally like a more realistic type anime and not the cartoon antics that are geared more towards children. I was beginning to wonder how it was that this series was rated TV-14 in the first place but then…
In pops Yoko with guns blazing kicking ass with her extremely animated boobs and suddenly I figured …maybe I should stick around and give it a chance lol. Next thing I know, the plot starts developing into a pretty decent story. Suddenly, Kamina’s over the top ramblings about how bad ass he and his team are becomes highly entertaining. They are also able to combine the robots into a more full-bodied looking form which I like much better than the walking-head version. A new enemy emerges and epic battles rage on through every episode that keeps me watching one right after the other.
As in the other Anime shows I’ve reviewed, this one is also inappropriate for kids. Not only are Yoko’s boobs somehow always in the shot bouncing around… but they bump into several other large-breasted ladies along the way who are equally prone to pushing those puppies up onto the guys. There is no actual nudity in this series but as shown above, they get pretty damn close.
Overall I am really enjoying this series. It was slow to start but winds up into something worth watching… there are 27 half-hour episodes and I’ve managed to get through 10 so far. All I can say is that things are really looking good and I will probably blow through a few hours more today before doing anything else productive lol.
