Knights Of Sidonia – Anime Sunday Reviews On Netflix

knights of sidonia

For the second installment of my new series: Anime Sunday Reviews on Netflix, I’ve picked the Netflix Original series Knights of Sidonia. Last week we kicked things off with the panty-showing-monster-series Rosario + Vampire if you care to check it out. I’d also like to point out that I am not affiliated with Netflix in any way but I chose this format due to it’s widespread use and the fact that I have a subscription lol.

The Plot: Knights of Sidonia follows a boy named Nagate Tanikaze, who was raised in seclusion only to emerge and learn that the world above was a very different place. It seems Earth was destroyed by a race of aliens called the Gauna many thousands of years ago and the remaining pockets of mankind fled in gigantic ships into space in order to survive. He learns that over the centuries humans have genetically altered themselves in order to survive in space such as the ability to photosynthesize the Suns rays. To fight off the Gauna, the giant ship, Sidonia, is protected by robotic ships called Gardes… naturally Nagate signs up to become a pilot and we watch him adjust to this new life while also fighting off the ever looming enemy.

Naturally it wouldn’t be anime without the girls… and Nagate has plenty of them. He is thrust into the spotlight very quickly as a Guardian pilot which grabs the attention of several girls throughout the ship. Unlike the last show that I reviewed, there are only minor sexual references in K.O.S. however there is some partial nudity from time-to-time.

I’m a big Robotech / Macross fan so this show is right up my alley. The feel of the entire show is very Robotech-like, from plot similarities right down to the ship designs. Unfortunately the ships don’t transform like the Valkyries but the space battle action is very fast-paced and highly entertaining!

The Gauna are somewhat of a mystery in the series. They are able to change their form and even combine to create huge ship-like formations. The only way they can be killed is to destroy their core which is hid beneath the fleshy-like exterior. They obviously possess intelligence but do not communicate in any way yet revealed. I have a feeling as the series progresses things are not entirely as they seem, however, that is strictly speculation.

Conclusion: Knights Of Sidonia is a top-notch show whether you are a fan of anime or not. It has the perfect mix of drama and sci-fi with some great character development and strong story lines. Season 1 is complete and Season 2 is said to be making its debut in Japan soon, however, it is unclear when it will be imported to the US by Netflix. I, for one, cant wait!

I am not affiliated with Netflix in any way and was NOT compensated for this post.
